RACER SIDEWAYS DAYTONA PROTOTYPE

NORTH AMERICA 2010 NATIONAL FINAL RESULTS

With the 2010 Racer Resin North America Championship race now completed on Saturday, Sunday 11/21/10 was time to run the 2010 Sideways Championship, run at Great Traditions in Philadelphia. Regional qualifying brouht 20 racers from several states to the event. Each driver ran four 10 minute segments on the Carrera layout. Drivers used handout Slot.IT 21.5k motors and could use inline or sidewinder configurations. However all opted for sidewinder, and the motors had 12T pinions pre-installed. Tires were a choice of handout Slot.IT S1 or S2 silicones.

Eligible cars were any livery of the Racer Sideways Riley or Dallara, with no real pattern of either model having an advantage. Qualifying results seeded drivers with similar lap times together. Result was Joseph Rosales as top qualifyer with a 6.7 second best lap. Next best were Robert Holt and Mike Stott, whose best laps were 6.8 seconds.

Racing began, and Chip Bell was first to finish the 4 lanes with 319 laps including a strong 83 laps on white. James Drayton and Adam Mashike followed, and each assumed the lead with 330 and 333 laps, respectively, including Adam putting up the first 85 lap run of the day. Sam Barbose, fresh from winning the Racer Resin N. America championship, made it look like a sweep was inevitable until encountering some electrical problems in the red lane, but still put up a total of 338 laps, which was good for the lead, and exceeded the winning lap total for last year's Sideways championship run.

As the rotation continued, the two top qualifiers, Joseph Rosales and Robert Holt rotated in, and had some close racing, with Holt putting up the first 83 of the day on outside gutter red, only to be topped by Joseph with a remarkable 85 laps on red. Holt was able to amass some frequent crashing miles from the gutter red lane wall, but overcame it and put up 86 laps on the next lane (white). Holt was still behind Rosales, and it would come down to who ran the higher total on the inner gutter white lane to decide how they would finish.

Michigan racers Mike Stott and Bob Cantin did battle, swapping their segment leads back and forth, and both contenders for the lead. Bob was able to edge out Mike in the yellow and white lanes to finish just ahead of him at the end. Dave Davis, second in Saturday's Racer Resin fina, started strong with 170 laps after two segments, a total only amassed by Joseph Rosales that day through 2 segments. But a relatively low 83 laps in the blue lane put a damper on his drive to the top, falling just short with 85 laps on inner gutter white to complete his run, with a final total of 338 laps.

338 laps was popular, with 3 racers finishing with that total, separated by lap segments. Holt squeaked by with one more lap to finish first with 339 laps, followed by Dave Davis, Sam Barbose, and Joseph Rosales, all with 338 laps.
